MEET AVA KERR-
Accredited Exercise Scientist of the Year 2016 & Manager of Health, Sport and Exercise Science Facilities at the University of the Sunshine Coast
Ava is the Manager of Health, Sport and Exercise Science Facilities at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She leads a technical services team to support the delivery of teaching and research activities within sport and exercise science, and the nutrition and dietetics programs. Ava is currently completing her PhD on the topic of body composition assessment methods and is passionate about best practice and quality control strategies to minimise measurement error. Ava is an Accredited Exercise Scientist with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), an International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) level 3 instructor and Australian New Zealand Bone Mineral Society (ANZBMS) clinical densitometry technician. Additionally, Ava is a Level 2 Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Additionally, Ava teaches mat work Pilates at her local Fitness Centre. The clients are a mix of young and old, male and female all with a mindset of improving their core strength and stability. Typically, there are a lot of dodgy backs and post baby bodies who need specific yet safe methods of strengthening the core structure as well as stretching and lengthening tight, overworked muscle groups. Many clients have limitations, such as injuries obtained in car accidents, but all are reassured that the class is for them and they can adapt any of the Pilates movements to suit their specific requirements. So although a motivating group based class , it is a place of non-judgement and individual attention is communicated throughout the lesson. Feedback from participants has been really positive – it’s wonderful to hear stories of renewed confidence in day to day living from a better back, improvements in balance and a stronger core. It is important to me for clients to feel successful after every class no matter what their level of skill in performing the movements. Essentially, they have reconnected to their body, focused on strengthening the weaknesses yet acknowledged the limitations such as age, injury or disease. Every class is a win-win!
