Men's health

Exercise plays a vital role in keeping men healthier, happier and alive for longer.

Men, it’s time to start looking after your health

Only 17% of men are both sufficiently active and meeting the muscle strengthening guidelines. However, exercise plays a vital role in keeping Australian blokes healthier, happier and alive for longer.

Men experience a range of health conditions and symptoms differently to women, whether it be depression and anxiety, prostate and testicular cancer, or increased risk of a heart attack or diabetes.

Men’s health can feel complex, but exercise doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re managing a health condition, returning to exercise after an injury, or simply looking to improve your wellbeing, the right type of exercise can support your journey and improve your quality of life.

Why men need to move more

Australian men face a higher risk of chronic illness, heart disease, obesity, and mental health challenges compared to women. On average, they live five years less than women, and only a small percentage meet the recommended physical activity guidelines.

Exercise plays a powerful role in supporting men’s physical and mental health at every stage of life, from adolescence through adulthood and into older age.

Heart disease

Regular exercise helps prevent heart disease by supporting cardiovascular health, lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Mental health

One of the best ways to manage stress, anxiety, and depression is with exercise. Team sports, resistance training, or a walk with a mate can make a difference.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men aged 50+. Exercise is safe and effective in assisting in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Diabetes

Men are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Combining aerobic activity with strength training helps regulate blood sugar and maintain healthy body weight.

Healthy ageing

A mix of strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular activity supports healthy ageing and reduces the risk of falls.

What type of exercise is best?

The most effective approach depends on your life stage, goals and health needs, but in general, the best types of exercise for men include:

  • Aerobic activity such as walking, swimming, running, or cycling supports heart health, endurance, and energy levels.
  • Strength training at least two times per week builds muscle, improves metabolism, and protects bones.
  • Balance and mobility exercises are important for injury prevention and functional movement, especially as you age.
  • Functional and sport-based activity can improve daily life, social connection, and motivation.
